Hope for Children in Guatemala
February 1, 2009 – Tempe, AZ
Through a partnership with 21st Century Vitamins, MAP International is providing more than 114,000 vitamins each month for children and other people in Guatemala.
Guatemala’s vice president, Dr. Rafael Espada, has called it a tragedy.
Half of the country’s children younger than 5 – more than 1 million boys and girls – suffer from chronic malnutrition. It is the highest malnourishment rate in Latin America. And it is the sixth-highest rate in the world.
Still reeling from a 36-year civil war that ended in 1996, much of Guatemala remains mired in poverty, social inequality and disease. With 12 million people, the country is the most populous nation in Central America. But millions of those people lack regular access to health services, the quality of which is severely limited. People remain plagued by AIDS, HIV, dengue fever, tuberculosis and other diseases.
Even if healthcare is available, many people, especially in rural and indigenous areas, cannot afford it. According to the World Bank, more than 9 million people live below the poverty line.
“Many people in Guatemala, especially children, consistently suffer from a lack of adequate healthcare,” said Michael J. Nyenhuis, president of Medical Assistance Programs (MAP) International. “Many suffer from diseases that are preventable and treatable. It is imperative that MAP work with partner agencies to provide essential medicines and health services.”
Through such a partnership with 21st Century Vitamins, headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, MAP International is providing more than 114,000 vitamins each month for people in some of Guatemala’s poorest areas. These supplements, which are primarily distributed to children through clinics in rural areas, are part of MAP’s overall health initiative to provide essential healthcare in Guatemala.
Since 1999, MAP has shipped more than $130 million – more than 332 tons – in antibiotics, bandages, oral rehydration salts and other medicines and medical supplies to partner agencies working in Guatemala. These partners include voluntary teams of short-term physicians as well as other nongovernmental organizations which help supply local clinics and hospitals with medical supplies. MAP supports more than 100 clinics and hospitals throughout the country.
“MAP is committed to providing the people of Guatemala with the life-saving medicines they need,” Mr. Nyenhuis said. “By working with partner agencies to save lives, we’re providing the people with health and hope they might not otherwise have.”

Tempe to Iraq: Vitamins to die for Couriers take Valley firm’s products on a perilous trip to Baghdad customers
The Arizona Republic Business Section D

About 10 times per year, Mohannad fills a truck with products manufactured by 21st Century Healthcare Inc. in Tempe and sends the cargo on the world’s most-dangerous delivery.
His drivers depart Amman, Jordan, and brave the 500plus mile trek to Baghdad to distribute 21st Century’s dietary supplements for sale in the country’s pharmacies and shops.
Along the way, there’s plenty of room for delay, in the form of land mines, car bombs, insurgent fire or simply drivers who decide they want to steal a batch of Arizona-produced vitamins. No insurance coverage is available for that specific trip to protect against such loss.
Mohannad, who now lives in Amman, requested that The Arizona Republic not print his family name due to fear for the safety of relatives still living in Iraq.
He and other 21st Century distributors from the Middle East met with company officials this week as part of a meet-and-greet that included a tour of the Tempe manufacturing facility. The worsening conflict and the possibility of civil war in Iraq was on everyone’s mind.
Mohannad has been distributing 21st Century’s products for the past 2 1/2 years and compares the job to the American Wild West as the rules of business change day y day. Due to the violence, which included destruction of a mosque in Samarra, stores have been closed for the past few weeks, including businesses selling 21st Century products. Upcoming religious holidays will keep them shuttered.
However, even if Iraq plunges into a full-scale civil war, “people will still need to eat, drink, and take their vitamins,” Mohannad said. The glucosamine product, used to lubricate joints, is a particularly popular seller.
Started in 1989, 21st Century sells its line of more than 200 products, ranging from vitamins to herbal teas to aluminum-free deodorant to pet-nutrition products, in 60 countries. Its labels are printed in 12 languages. Last year it entered a distribution agreement to sell products in China, even tea.
The privately held company, which counted revenues of about $25 million in 2005, wants to expand into Iran and Libya in the next six months, said Craig Rochette, vice president of international business development. About 40 percent of 21st Century’s sales occur in foreign countries. About $2.5 million in annual revenue comes from the Middle East, he said.
The Iranian government has welcomed 21st Century and the company is seeking legal approval from the U.S. government to ship its supplements to the country. It already has lined up a distributor.
“The big players, the really large vitamin manufacturers, don’t want to deal with the problems in these countries. We’ll take the problems,” Rochette said. “In Europe, we don’t have much penetration at all because there is an established old-boy network of companies that do both importing and distribution even on the retail level. It’s very hard for a younger, smaller American company to launch a line there.”
Instead, they are building their brand in very obscure markets, and it appears to be working. In Kuwait, for example, company officials say that 21st Century is a top-selling brand.
Would a full-scale Iraqi civil war completely shut down the company in the Middle East?
“It will have somewhat of a trickle-down effect, but not an immediate, dramatic impact on our sales in countries like Yemen or Kuwait or Turkey,” said Rochette, who added with a sigh: “It could get worse before it gets better, but we have to keep moving along.”

Aluminum worries no sweat for deodorant maker East Valley Tribune.com Business Update
December 29, 2004 – by John Yantis, Tribune
HERBAL CHOICE: 21st Century Healthcare president Steve Snyder, left, and deodorant division president William Grundemann show the company’s aluminum-free deodorant.
Toru Kawana, Tribune
A Tempe company is taking advantage of a new government warning on antiperspirants to market an aluminum-free, all-natural deodorant that uses a bacteria-eating plant from the Swiss Alps to keep the smell away.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruled this month that antiperspirants must carry an FDA warning telling consumers about the potential health hazards of aluminum containing products. The warnings say people with kidney disease should consult a doctor before they use the product.
The label also says antiperspirants should be kept out of reach of children. It recommends calling a poison control center if the product is swallowed.
Capitalizing on the news, 21st Century Healthcare says it has a safe alternative called Herbal Clear Naturally, a deodorant that does not contain aluminum or paraben-based preservatives.
"We just believe there’s a need for an alternative in that glut of aluminum-based products," said Steve Snyder, president of the company. "There’s very few products that are value priced and we just think it’s a wonderful niche market opportunity, particularly with the mass market relationships 21st Century already has."
The FDA mandate, issued in a final rule in the Federal Register in June, was 15 years in the making, said William Grundemann, director of the Herbal Clear Naturally division. He said aluminum is used in antiperspirants to clog the pores.
"In other words your putting metal into your cellular system to stop sweat from coming out," he said. "Antiperspirants stop a bodily function, sweating, which is not necessarily good. Your glands are trying to get rid of waste material. You just want to obviously not have an odor while you sweat."
Herbal Clear Naturally uses lichen to ward off the smell. Grundemann says the plant is being used in FDA clinical trials as an antibiotic.
"It just seeks out bacteria and kills it," he said. "What it does in our product is it stops the decomposing molecules in sweat. Once they decompose, they stink. So if we can stop the metabolism of the decomposition, they don’t have any odor."
All it takes is six to eight good swipes under each arm, he says.
"It takes two to three days for a body to exude chemicals you’ve been putting on," Grundemann said. "You’ll be odor-free. I can guarantee that."
The company says a 1990 study done by the Battelle Seattle Research Center found the overall risk for Alzheimer’s disease was 60 percent greater than normal among lifetime users of aluminumcontaining antiperspirants "with a trend toward a higher risk with increasing frequency of use." The study appeared in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology.
The company also says aluminum in antiperspirants has a possible link to breast cancer in both men and women since it is easily absorbed through the skin into the fatty tissues of the breast. It points to research from the Journal of Applied Toxicology that found "The strongest ... evidence comes from the unexplained clinical observations showing a disproportionately high incidence of breast cancer in the upper quadrant of the breast, just the local to which these cosmetics are applied."
The FDA said antiperspirants are generally recognized as safe and effective and should not be toxic for most people if they are swallowed. Those with renal dysfunction or immature renal function, like infants, are at a higher risk from any exposure to aluminum, the FDA said.
While the agency said it did not find current evidence sufficient to conclude aluminum from antiperspirant use results in Alzheimer’s disease, it did say literature on the topic remains controversial and unresolved.
"In summary, the literature shows that at high doses and long-term industrial exposures, aluminum can be associated with recognizable, specific neurologic effects," the agency said in the Federal Register. "However, to date, the agency considers the evidence insufficient to link aluminum to Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease or ALS."
The agency found the theory that aluminum antiperspirants cause breast cancer also lacked sufficient evidence.
Grundemann said more research is needed to ensure there is no risk.
Aside from the aluminum, Herbal Clear is also parabenfree. Parabens, used as a preservative in deodorants, were found in breast cancer tumors during a study at the University of Reading in Reading, England, Grundemann said.
"I can promise you we will see a movement against the use of paraben-based preservatives next," he said.
Grundemann founded a company called Herbal Care Systems, which held the trade name for Herbal Clear. He sold it to Snyder because many of 21st Century’s products are sold by large retailers. Body Blue of Toronto, the largest deodorant filler in North America makes the product.
While most all-natural deodorants sell for $4 or more, Grundemann says Herbal Clear is priced from $1.89 to $2.29.
Locally, it can be found in small drug and grocery chains and at selected Targets and Walgreens. It can be ordered at www.21stcenturyvitamins.com on the Web.
